I found it buried underneath the stone / gone from living memory / where all the streets are overgrown and every house is empty / and though I’m walking on the same old ground you stood upon / when you were around / there’s nothing left of you except this book I found /

And it was written in the shaking hand of someone in a hurry / in places hard to understand / the letters scratch and scurry / and though you can’t contain a soul within the pages of something so thin / I felt as though I knew you well when I read this:

Stay with me / darling won’t you stay with me / I’m falling like the heron as he dives / the waters wild / swirling in the rising tide / I can barely pull away in time /

I stood a while and watched the foxes stalk discreetly through the rubble / I felt as though I'd stepped through time / a witness to your struggle / and though it’s only written on the page / a silent plea / asleep for an age / I hear your voice / it sings to me and gently says:

Stay with me / darling won’t you stay with me / I’m falling like the salmon as he tires / a waterfall / pushing with uncaring force / hits me as I pray for strength to rise /
